PODCAST 2 SERIAL - SEASON 3: EPISODE 1 - A Bar Fight Walks Into the Justice Center
Here is the first episode of the third season of Serial.
Anna, a young woman at a bar, is repeatedly harassed by being slapped on the butt by men she does not know. The harassment eventually results in a bar fight where law enforcement gets involved and Anna accidentally assaults a cop. With the fight started by men harassing Anna, why is she the only one getting arrested? This episode covers her case from the pretrial until she eventually pleads guilty, just like over 96% of the cases in the Justice Center complex.

PODCAST 1 'Punishment Without Crime' Highlights The Injustice Of America's Misdemeanor System
This is the podcast of an interview show from NPR (National Public Radio). The show is called Fresh Air and the host is Terry Gross. In this show, Gross
conducts interviews with people from all across the spectrum, including politicians, artists, and experts in their field. Here is how the show is described on their website - "Each week, nearly 5 million people listen to the show's intimate conversations broadcast on more than 624 NPR stations across the country, as well as in Europe on the World Radio Network. In 2015, Fresh Air was the No. 1 most downloaded podcast on iTunes.Though Fresh Air has been categorized as a "talk show," it hardly fits the mold. Its 1994 Peabody Award citation credits Fresh Air with "probing questions, revelatory interviews and unusual insights." And a variety of top publications count Gross among the country's leading interviewers. The show gives interviews as much time as needed, and complements them with comments from well-known critics and commentators. Fresh Air is produced at WHYY-FM in Philadelphia and broadcast nationally by NPR."
This episode is from a show that aired in early January where Gross interviewed former federal public defender Alexandra Natapoff on her book on the issue of misdemeanor crimes and how the legal system handles them. A misdemeanor is a crime that is considered less serious than a felony - in other words, the maximum punishment would be less than a year in prison. For a definition of misdemeanors click here. Natapoff's book details the impact being convicted, ie being found guilty, of a misdemeanor can have on your life, particularly if you are poor.
Is this how you imagine justice working in America? Is this fair?
This will help set the groundwork for the first episode of Serial, season 3.
